modern myths+aesthetic series: mytholgy asked “aegir or bragi?”

aegir; norse god of the ocean

Ægir is the god of the ocean in Norse mythology. His wife is the sea goddess Ran with whom he has nine daughters (the billow maidens), who wore white robes and veils. His two faithful servants are Eldir and Fimafeng. The latter was killed by the treacherous god Loki during a banquet the gods held at Aegir’s undersea hall near the island of Hler. Aegir was known for the lavish entertainment he gave to the other gods.

vikings-shieldmaiden:

Brunhild (also spelled Brynhildr, Brünnhilde, Brynhild) was a shieldmaiden and a valkyrie in Norse mythology, where she appears as a main character in the Völsunga saga and some Eddic poems treating the same events. Under the name Brünnhilde she appears in the Nibelungenlied and therefore also in Richard Wagner’s opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. She may be inspired by the Visigothic princess Brunhilda of Austrasia. The history of Brynhildr includesfratricide, a long battle between brothers, and dealings with the Huns.

…also referred to as a princess who disobeyed Odin stripped of her valkyrie powers, she was put into a deep slumber, on a castle on top of a mountain surrounded by a magic fire, and can only awakened by a brave man with a kiss, which she was by Sigurd, the dragon slayer. With Sigurd, she had a daughter Aslaug.

My Favorite God/giant from Norse mythology. Fenrir. Son of Loki and destined to kill Odin during Ragnorok. So powerful he was captured but was tricked into it because no God was able to stand up to him. Gotta love that.

↳ Freyja

Freyja (Old Norse for ‘Lady’) is the goddess of love, beauty, fertility, magic, and war. She rides a chariot pulled by two cats and owns both the mythical necklace Brísingamen and a cloak made of falcon feathers.

She and her twin brother Freyr are part of the Vanir, a group of gods associated with nature and magic. In the Prose Edda, Freyr and Freyja are referred to as the most glorious of all the gods and goddesses.

Freyja is married to a god named Óðr and has two daughters with him, who are called Hnoss and Gersemi; her dwelling is called Fólkvangr and since she’s one of the Valkyries, her halls host half of those who die in battle.

MYTHOLOGY MEME - [2/?] NORSE GODS/GODDESSES: FREYJA

“Hail to the Warrior Woman

on the equinox morning,

white-armored, choosing the slain

by her own glorious criteria,

harbor to the defenders of beauty.

O Freya who rides with Valkyries,

give me strength to defend all that I love

for I am dull and frightened with years of defeat

and I have forgotten the mystery of shield mates in love.”

Hel [Odin] cast into Niflheim, and gave to her power over nine worlds, to apportion all abodes among those that were sent to her: that is, men dead of sickness or of old age. She has great possessions there; her walls are exceeding high and her gates great. Her hall is called Sleet-Cold; her dish, Hunger; Famine is her knife; Idler, her thrall; Sloven, her maidservant; Pit of Stumbling, her threshold, by which one enters; Disease, her bed; Gleaming Bale, her bed-hangings. She is half blue-black and half flesh-color and very lowering and fierce. (Gylfaginning, from The Prose Edda by Snorri Sturlson)

↳ valhalla

In Norse mythology, Valhalla is the place where the souls of those who die in battle are gathered to await Ragnarök, the end of the world. Among them are all sorts of warriors, from rulers to simple footsoldiers, and collectively they are known as the einherjar. There are several mythological creatures who live in Valhalla as well, such as the goat Heiðrún, who produces mead for the einherjar, and the stag Sæhrímnir, who is resurrected every night to provide sustenance for the einherjar.
